In 1966 Tom Casey co-founded County Kildare Career Information Service to provide information free to parents and students. He was one of the first Professional Guidance Counsellors to be introduced into the Irish Second-Level Educational system after qualifying from University College Dublin in 1968. The 18 pioneers who graduated set up the first Institute to represent professional Guidance Counsellors, now known as the Institute of Guidance Counsellors. Tom was their first Chairman from 1968 to 1972.
He was indefatigable in the active promotion of the professional development of Guidance Counsellors and in 1969 wrote the The Case for Proper Guidance which was distributed to all second-level schools. He also compiled and co-wrote “The Genesis of Professional Guidance Counselling in Ireland” which was published in September 2013.
In Jan 1979 Tom set up a new consultancy which offered a private guidance service to students and adults.
Joe joined Tom in 1997 and together they became Casey Career Consultancy.
Prior to this Joe had worked in industry and counselling for 14 years. His career in Engineering had taken him to Africa and the UK on large infra-structural projects. Working with a broad range of people from different cultural backgrounds sparked a deep interest in our personal, individual, lived experiences of life and this inadvertently led him on to Counselling & Career Guidance. After completing a Diploma in Counselling & Guidance in 1991 at University of Reading he worked as a counsellor with drugs users helping them choose alternatives to dependency and directionless lives. In 1996 he began a new journey and pursued the Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Career Guidance to focus on educational and career decision-making.
Joe’s experiences in industry, counselling & life give him invaluable insights for guiding his clients in their personal and career development. He has worked on a one-to-one basis with over 3000 students & adults of all ages from Ireland, the UK and beyond. With a quest to empower and inform individualised decisions so his clients can make stimulating, productive and personally meaningful education, career & life choices this storey continues.
